New York’s Latin music giant Joe Cuba died on February 15, 2009 at the age of 78. As prolific as he was influential, Joe Cuba was one of the main pioneers of the Latin soul movement in the 1960s, which included the popular boogaloo craze. Joe Cuba and his band were part of a pivotal generation of NY-raised Puerto Rican Americans (Nuyoricans) who helped define the city’s Latin music styles following the mambo-era of the 1960s. One of the first Salsa bands to cross-over into the American music scene, selling over a million copies of their hit tune, ‘Bang Bang’.

In honor of the great late legend Joe Cuba the current Joe Cuba Sextet under the musical direction of Willie Villegas defines the term “Latin soul” incorporating the rhythms and vocals that the Joe Cuba Sextet made so famous in Harlem and throughout the world.

The members of the Joe Cuba Sextet have been part of Joe’s band for over twenty years.

For the first time ever, Colombian music icons Aterciopelados bring their Grammy Award winning Latin rock to Australia.

Led by songwriters Andrea Echeverri (vocals) and Hector Buitrago (bass), Atercios (ah-tair-see-ohs) annex and combine styles with a healthy disregard for musical boundaries: new wave, lounge, reggae, bossa nova, electro, hard rock, bolero, Mexican banda, house, rumba-rock and straightforward pop anthems, not to mention surf-rock guitar lines.

Accompanied by some of the best musicians in Colombia, the pair is renowned for creating magic onstage.

For the past 12+ years Bio Ritmo has treated audiences across America to its own unique and inspiring vision of what a salsa band can be. The nine-member salsa machine has performed in Puerto Rico and toured five times across the United States. The last time the group hit the stage here at SOBs, people were talking about the event weeks later. Bio Ritmo are comfortable performing in a variety of settings and their willingness to play in venues which more typically showcase rock or jazz music has lead to an eclectic mix of fans. Fresh in its energy and confidence, the sound evokes the simplicity and freedom of classic Nuyorican salsa. Flavored with bomba, samba, charanga, and even a bolero, the band treats the listener as well as the dancer with it’s incredible grooves, inspiring solos, and soul-searching lyrics.

Beginning with its birth in 1991 as a rhythm driven drummer’s ensemble, Bio Ritmo has sought to connect with its fans every second it spends on stage and with every song it commits to record. Embracing the stripped-down and straight-up street-wise salsa sound thats so rare in today’s contemporary Latin music scene, Bio Ritmo’s “old school with a twist” approach is converting skeptics and delighting dancers & audiences everywhere they play. The band has been building up a serious fan-base here in New York- their last appearance downtown had the group playing a 2-hour plus show, and the crowded, sweaty audience begged for more! Salsa Music Band: La Salida – Dislocados

Hard Salsa from Europe influenced mainly by New York and Puerto Rican sounds, with some Cuban, concentrating on rich sounds with meaningful lyrics.

Dislocados exploded onto the Kyiv music scene as the Kiev Salsa Kings in November 2005. Led by Ilya Yeresko, one of Ukraine’s most respected young pianists and composers, with – among others – Dennis Adu (named best trumpeter in Ukraine at the Dodj Competition 2009) they started playing in Kyiv’s best live music bars. This first salsa band in Ukraine was soon joined by Karolina Patocki and Lesya Zdorovetskaya, finalizing the group’s vocal flavor, and now the 11-piece band has become a force to be reckoned with in the country. Dislocados’ new name, literally translated as “dislocated”, plays on the crazy personality of the band, and the idea that the birth country of the musicians does not dictate their musical direction and expertise. They continue to perform three times a week to live audiences around Ukraine, and have just entered the international market with the release of “Resaca” on Salsa Dura Mundial, a worldwide salsa compilation album out of New York from Latin Soul Records. After gaining popularity in New York and Western Europe, Dislocados has now released the first salsa album to come out of Ukraine, with an intro written by salsa legend Andy Harlow, featuring ten hot original salsa tracks, inspired from Puerto Rico, New York, and Cuba.
